Dr. Gilbert A. Leisman

Dr. Leisman was a paleobotanist and professor working at Kansas State Teachers College, later Emporia State University, from 1955 to 1996. He published numerous papers, primarily on Carboniferous paleobotany, and supervised many undergraduate student and graduate student projects and theses. These pages are devoted to his work and legacy.

  • Courses
Dr. Leisman taught courses in biology and botany within the Biological Science Division at Emporia State University. We would love to hear about his lectures and labs. If you (still) have any course notes, hand outs, exams, etc., we'd love to archive a copy with your permission.

  • Unread posts Field trips and Meetings
Dr. Leisman led and attended field trips and meetings through out his career. Here we share some of those pictures that we have. We also would like to ask for your help in identifying people in those pictures. And if you have stories or pictures, we'd like to share them with others.

  • Unread posts Localities/Coal balls
Dr. Leisman visited countless fossil localities over the years. However, as curators, it's our job to figure out exactly how many localities he visited (and where they are) if he made collections of fossils from them. Similarly, he collected thousands of coal balls, primarily from Kansas, but not exclusively. Most he numbered and some he sectioned and studied. However, whatever notes he made linking coal ball numbers to specific mines have been lost over time. Here we show images of localities and coal balls with numbers. We know it's a long shot, but any help to establish origins would be greatly appreciated.

  • No unread posts Specimens
Dr. Leisman collected thousands of specimens over his career. We are asking for you help. When we adopted his collection from Emporia State, we received many of his specimens without any data about them. This forum illustrates some of them about which we know very little. "Where are they from?" "Who collected them?" These are just some of the questions we appeal to you to help us answer.

  • No unread posts Students/Assistants/Collaborators
Dr. Leisman mentored numerous students, both undergraduate and graduate, and worked with dozens of colleagues during his long career. We have started to compile a list but presently it includes only MS students that completed their theses. So we know we are missing many people who worked on class projects, undergraduate theses, worked or assisted in his laboratory, went in to the field with him, etc. Any information about them, their projects and, of course, any stories we'd be happy to document on these pages.

  • No unread posts Publications, Abstracts & Projects
We have compiled a list of over 80 publications and abstracts for Dr. Leisman, but we know this list is not complete. If you know of any others, or if you remember projects that he, other students, or yourself worked on, please let us know. We have many "groups" of slides and peels that appear to have been grouped for a purpose, but we lack notes or any additional information about them.
